Professional Commitment

Both Lori and Deborah firmly believe that continuing professional development is key to maintaining expertise and skills. They have extensively pursued educational opportunities to expand their scientific knowledge base, enhance their writing and editing skills, and explore new media technology. Both have earned a core and an advanced certificate from the American Medical Writers Association (AMWA), representing participation in a series of workshops on editing, writing, and ancillary topics. Other education and training has focused on standard operating procedures, creation of style guides, website design, publications marketing, indexing, copyright and permissions, and electronic media.

To help meet the expanding needs of clients, both Lori and Deb have remained current in their knowledge and skills in tools and technology. They are proficient with such programs as Adobe Acrobat, ConstantContact, EndNote, Final Draft, GoToMeeting, PowerPoint, and Visio. In addition, they are adept use social media to market their work as well as the work of their clients. The Editorial Rx Twitter account (@Editorial_Rx) has nearly 400 followers, and follows more than 900 accounts to remain up-to-date on health care issues, medical communication topics, and trends in publishing. Lori promotes her AMWA Journal Blog through various social media sites, and her posts are popular among AMWA members and nonmembers alike.

Involvement in Professional Organizations

As members of several professional associations, Lori and Deborah continually enhance and expand their professional skills and network with other medical communication specialists to ensure that their clients receive outstanding services.

Lori is extensively involved in the American Medical Writers Association (AMWA), the premiere organization for medical communicators. In addition to serving as the Editor of the AMWA Journal for 9 years, Lori has been active on a variety of national committees that have been charged with developing the annual conference program, enhancing the educational program, and planning the strategic course of the organization. She also developed AMWA educational workshops and panel discussions at the annual conference.  At the chapter level, Lori has served as Chapter President and has coordinated several annual regional educational programs. Also a member of the Alliance for Continuing Medical Education, Lori created an educational session on writing needs assessments for presentation at the 2012 Alliance meeting.

Deborah is the current AMWA Florida Chapter President and has served as the Publications Coordinator (and Webmaster) for the AMWA Florida Chapter and has served on several national committees, including the Publications and the Web and Internet Technology committees. In addition, she has been a co-leader of the Short Course for Journal Editors, offered annually by the Council of Science Editors.
