Officer Bios
Lori L. Alexander, MTPW, ELS, President, has been a medical writer and editor for 25 years. Before founding Editorial Rx, Inc., Lori worked at several prestigious organizations, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, and Lahey Clinic. she also currently serves as the Editor of the American Medical Writers Association (AMWA) Journal, the award-winning peer-reviewed journal for medical communicators.
A leader within the medical writing community, Lori is often sought out to share her expertise on the field of medical communication, and she has been interviewed for a Nature article, was invited by the Society for Technical Communication to write an article in its news magazine, was invited by postdoc fellows at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville to speak about careers in medical communication, and was invited to participate in an editor's Forum at the annual meeting of the Association of Teachers of Technical Writing. Lori is an innovative educator and has developed three-hour AMWA workshops that she regularly leads at AMWA conferences, resulting in outstanding evaluations from participants. Lori's posts on the AMWA Journal Blog draw hundreds of readers from within AMWA as well as from external audiences.
Lori graduated cum laude from the University of New Hampshire with a bachelor’s degree in English (journalism). She graduated magna cum laude from Northeastern University, Boston, earning a master’s degree in professional and technical writing, with a concentration in medical writing. She is certified as an editor in the life sciences by the Board of Editors in the Life Sciences (BELS).
Deborah A. Whippen, Vice President, has been at the forefront of medical publications and association management since 1984. She has served as the Managing Editor and Executive Editor of the Journal of Clinical Oncology, the leading peer-reviewed journal for oncologists, and currently is the Managing Editor for the Society of Surgical Oncology. Deborah was also instrumental in the strategic planning, development, and marketing of curricula, self-study products, and other educational products at ASCO, where she was employed for 18 years. She is highly skilled in project management and in successfully completing long-term projects such as nonprofit association strategic planning and a continuing medical education self-study for accreditation.
Deborah established Whippen Consulting in 2005, which was a strategic partner of Editorial Rx, Inc. She merged Whippen Consulting with Editorial Rx., Inc., in 2007, assuming the position of Vice President to help provide a broader range of services to clients. Deborah also oversees the Editorial Rx-affiliated publishing company, Editorial Rx Press, as Publisher and Editor.
Deborah is an enthusiastic user of new technology and routinely uses social media such as Twitter (@Editorial_ Rx) and Facebook to network within the health care, medical communication, and publishing communities. She created and launched a website for the AMWA Florida Chapter, which she continues to maintain and update. She has also managed the development of applications to bring print publications to mobile device users. Deborah is an engaging speaker and has been invited to share her knowledge of publishing and social media at local events.
Deborah earned a bachelor’s degree in anthropology and English, graduating cum laude from the University of Massachusetts, Boston, and completed postgraduate coursework in the Master of Science in Publications program at New York University, New York.
